Wix is a fantastic platform for beginners, but as your e-commerce business grows, you might find yourself needing the advanced inventory, shipping, and app integrations that Shopify provides.
When you make the decision to migrate, the most common source of anxiety is: "What happens to my domain name?"
Turn your name into a real website

Here is a complete guide to handling your domain when moving from Wix to Shopify in 2026.
Option 1: Pointing Your Wix Domain to Shopify (Recommended)
If you purchased your domain through Wix, you don't actually have to move the domain registration to Shopify. You can keep paying Wix for the domain yearly, but tell the domain to "point" to your new Shopify website.
How to do it:
- Keep your Wix account active (you only need to pay for the domain, cancel the website plan).
- Go to your Wix Domain Management settings.
- Edit the DNS records.
- Point the A Record to Shopify's IP address (
23.227.38.65). - Point the CNAME record to
shops.myshopify.com.
Why this is good: It's fast. Your new Shopify site will be live on your domain almost immediately.
Option 2: Transferring the Domain Entirely
If you want to cut ties with Wix completely, you can transfer the domain registration to a third-party registrar like Namecheap, or directly to Shopify.
How to do it:
- Unlock your domain in the Wix dashboard.
- Request a transfer authorization code (EPP code) from Wix.
- Go to your new registrar (e.g., Namecheap) and initiate a domain transfer using that code.
- Wait. Transfers can take up to 7 days to complete.
Note: You cannot transfer a domain if it was registered or transferred within the last 60 days (ICANN rules).

Rebranding During a Migration
Often, businesses use a platform migration as an opportunity to rebrand. Maybe your original Wix store was janes-crafts-and-things.com and you want to elevate to a cleaner brand name on Shopify.
If you are rebranding:
- Brainstorm new names and use a tool like Namecheckly to ensure the
.comand matching social handles are available. - Try a Shopify Store Name Generator if you are stuck.
- Once you secure the new domain, you must set up 301 redirects from your old Wix domain to your new Shopify domain so you don't lose any SEO juice or returning customers.
Don't Forget Email
Remember that Shopify does not provide email hosting. If you were using Wix for email, you will need to set up Google Workspace or Zoho Mail with your domain to keep receiving contact@yourdomain.com emails.
