Google Play Name Checker
Google Play does not reserve app names — it reserves package IDs, permanently. This checker shows how many apps Play already surfaces for your name, then gives you a hard available-or-taken verdict on the package ID you are about to commit to for life.
Quick Answer: Can two apps have the same name on Google Play?
Yes. Google Play does not enforce unique app titles, so several published apps can legitimately share one name — which is why no tool can return a truthful “available” verdict for a Play name. What Play does enforce is the application ID (for example com.yourcompany.yourapp): it must be globally unique, and once you publish it, it can never be changed or reused, even if you unpublish the app. Open Developer details above to check yours. Apple works the opposite way — iOS app names are unique, so the App Store row is a definitive verdict.
What Google Play actually enforces
The application ID is unique and permanent
Your application ID (also called the package name, e.g. com.acme.notes) identifies your app forever on Play and on every device that installs it. Google's own documentation is explicit that once you publish, the ID cannot be changed — and it cannot be reused by anyone, including you, even after you unpublish. Choosing it is the single most irreversible decision in an Android launch.
Names aren't reserved — but impersonation is still banned
Sharing a name is allowed; imitating a specific app or brand is not. Play's Impersonation and Intellectual Property policies remove apps whose title, icon or developer name could mislead users into thinking they come from someone else. A crowded name is a marketing problem and a takedown risk, which is why the board above reports how many apps Play already surfaces for it.
The title is capped at 30 characters
Play limits the store listing title to 30 characters and forbids promotional text in it (“#1”, “Free”, “Best”). The same 30-character cap applies on the App Store, so a name that fits one fits both.
Your package ID starts with a domain you should actually own
Application IDs use reverse-domain notation — com.acme.notes assumes you control acme.com. It is a convention, not a check, but it is a good one: the ID is permanent, so pointing it at a domain someone else owns is a brand problem you can never undo. Register the domain first, then derive the ID from it.
Google Play name questions, answered
- Can two apps have the same name on Google Play?
- Yes. Google Play does not reserve or enforce unique app titles, so multiple published apps can share the same name. That is why no checker can honestly report a Play app name as 'available'. What Play enforces instead is the application ID (package name), which must be globally unique.
- How do I check if a package name is already used on Google Play?
- Open 'Developer details' in the checker above and enter your candidate package ID, for example com.acme.notes. Namecheckly looks up play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=<your id> and reports taken if a listing exists and available if none does. The suggested ID is derived from your domain, which you can edit.
- Can I change my app's package name after publishing?
- No. Google's documentation is explicit: once your app is published on Google Play, the application ID cannot be changed. It also cannot be reused — not by another developer and not by you — even if you unpublish the app. Changing it means shipping a brand new listing and losing your installs, ratings and reviews.
- What is the character limit for a Google Play app title?
- 30 characters. Play also forbids promotional or performance claims in the title, such as 'Free', 'Best' or '#1', and rejects listings that use emoji or repeated punctuation for attention. The Apple App Store uses the same 30-character cap, so one title can serve both stores.
- My name is free on Play but taken on the App Store — what now?
- Treat the iOS verdict as the binding one, because Apple genuinely reserves names and will reject the metadata outright. Picking a name that clears both stores is nearly always cheaper than launching under two different names and splitting your search visibility and marketing.
